#3: Philipp Zrenner + Tabata von der Locht
26.11.21–30.01.22
A very unique scent permeates the rooms on the ground floor of the Holbeinhaus. Not at all intrusive, but nevertheless present. Charged with lots of memories and pleasant feelings: summer rain in the city. Philipp Zrenner (*1995) brings the outside in. He grabs urban space and the places of relaxation surrounding it, distils them and releases their essence in his site-specific works on the GROUNDFLOOR PLAYGROUND of the Kunstverein. What often takes the form of a coarse, noisy and humorous simulation of a state or process, the viewer encounters in the canvas works of Tabata von der Locht (*1996) in a very delicate and reserved manner. She too appropriates the outside space, "curating" painterly gestures found in her surroundings in textile layers on the painting. The wafer-thin top layer partially reveals the underlying layer. Often, however, structures that have been worked in or pressed off there can only be guessed at. For the GROUNDFLOOR PLAYGROUND, Tabata von der Locht collected, among other things, imprints of the surroundings of the Kunstverein that she perceived and captured them in this way in a wall-sized work.
Philipp Zrenner, invited by the Kunstverein, has carefully chosen his colleague and partner Tabata von der Locht as both co- and counter-player for this third edition of the experimental field for young artistic positions at the Kunstverein. It is precisely the contrast, despite all the similarities, that makes the dialogue between the works of the two artists so incredibly exciting.
