Mauricio Hölzemann + Pierre-Yves Delannoy

Running away is easy,
it’s the leaving that’s hard

September 19 – October 18, 2026

A project as part of GROUNDFLOOR PLAYGROUND

We cordially invite you and your friends to the opening on Saturday, September 19, at 6:30 p.m. To kick things off, Christian Thöner will speak with Mauricio Hölzemann and Pierre-Yves Delannoy about their work.

Leaving their small-town and rural hometowns at an early age forms the starting point for the one-hour video work “Running away is easy, it’s the leaving that’s hard” (2025) by Mauricio Hölzemann and Pierre-Yves Delannoy. The two artists are a couple. In addition to their respective artistic practices, they also work as a duo. In their exploration of belonging and identity, they combine documentary intimacy, fiction, and humor.

For the work shown at the Kunstverein, they both returned together to the places where they grew up: Filderstadt in Baden-Württemberg and Châlons-en-Champagne in France. After a long time apart, they confront their own pasts there and share their memories with one another. As queer individuals, both set out from the countryside for the city. What motivated them to do so, what was left behind, and how does their personal history shape their view of what was once home?

The return is a farewell for which there was no room back then. In familiar, mostly uneventful settings from their childhood and youth, a past experienced in solitude and a present shared together overlap in the shimmering heat of summer. Past expectations, hopes, and hurts find a new life in the act of telling and listening. What was once a flight-like departure can thus, belatedly, become a conscious farewell. Running away is easy. It is the farewell that is difficult.

The video work, which was already on view at the turn of the year at the Kunsthaus Kaufbeuren, directed by Lisa Britzger, is displayed on the ground floor of the Kunstverein in dialogue with selected video stills as well as felt works—some of which are installations—by Pierre-Yves Delannoy—memories of a childhood that should not be forgotten.

Mauricio Hölzemann and Pierre-Yves Delannoy live and work as a couple and an artist duo in Munich.

Their performative and media-based works have been shown at venues including the Goethe-Institut in Paris, space n.n. in Munich, the AkademieGalerie in Munich, the Haus der Kunst, and the Kunsthaus Kaufbeuren. While Pierre-Yves Delannoy pursues an approach rooted in architecture and media art, Mauricio Hölzemann brings his experience in acting, performance, and video art to the collaboration. Together, they studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in the class of Prof. Julian Rosefeldt.
